Saluda Grade Trail Project Launches Next Phase of Community Engagement

The Saluda Grade Trail project, which will transform a historic 31-mile rail corridor into a multi-use trail connecting communities across North and South Carolina, is entering its next phase. Conserving Carolina and PAL: Play, Advocate, Live Well are working with Blue Ion and Tourism Impact Services to launch a series of community input opportunities to ensure the trail reflects local values, supports economic development, and strengthens regional connections. We need to hear from you!

Building on Success

Building on Success

Following the completion of the feasibility study, this new phase will focus on:

  • Developing strategies to strengthen local economies and promote the unique culture, businesses, and natural beauty of the region.
  • Creating a plan for community engagement to make sure those closest to the trail are leading its vision, development, and management as a regional asset.
Opportunities to get Involved

Opportunities to Get Involved

  • Online Survey (Oct 20 – Dec 1): Open to all residents and visitors. Share your vision for how the Saluda Grade Trail can support recreation, health, business, and tourism! Take Online Survey Here
  • Fall Forum (Nov 18, 4:30 – 6:30 pm, Landrum Farmers Market): A community-wide gathering to discuss values, opportunities, and concerns. RSVP to the Fall Forum Here.
  • Spring Forum (April 23, 5:30 - 7:30 pm Polk County High School): A regional event to present completed plans, celebrate the completion of another phase of work, and a step closer to the trail becoming a reality.

This work is made possible through funding from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) and the strong partnership of organizations and communities across both states.

The Saluda Grade Trail will honor the legacy of the historic railroad by once again connecting communities across North and South Carolina. We invite everyone to attend the public meeting and complete the survey to help shape the vision for a trail that reflects the community’s priorities for recreation, economic development and a renewed sense of place.
