Next Steps in Planning the Saluda Grade Trail

Next Steps in Planning the Saluda Grade Trail

June 24th 2025

Last summer, the Saluda Grade Trail coalition presented findings from the first in-depth study of the trail—and now we are moving into the next major phase of planning the trail. We continue seeking input, information, and ideas so that we can create the best possible version of the Saluda Grade Trail.

You can see a summary of the 2024 feasibility study here, which includes takeaways from extensive public input, economic impact findings, an overview of trail design options, analysis of safety issues and more.

The work of developing the vision for the trail continues this year, as we celebrate the exciting news that we now own the rail line and we look ahead to our next steps.

In August 2024, the Saluda Grade Trail was awarded a $450,000 grant from the federal Appalachian Regional Initiative for Stronger Economies (ARISE) program. A portion of this grant will cover planning for community engagement and economic development.

This summer, we will be selecting experts to lead this planning process. These consultants will work closely with the Saluda Grade Trail partners and community members to develop the following:

1. Community Engagement Plan: They will produce a strategic plan for engaging the community and key stakeholders throughout the entire process of Saluda Grade Trail project—from answering trail design questions, to creating the trail on the ground, to managing the trail as a recreational asset for the public to enjoy.

2. Economic Development Plan: They will produce an economic development and marketing plan that leverages the Saluda Grade Trail to promote tourism, outdoor recreation, downtown redevelopment, and new business growth in the region. This plan will outline steps to encourage local economic growth that aligns with our communities’ goals.

We look forward to engaging our communities as we move forward on the exciting process of developing the vision for the Saluda Grade Trail.
